Flamingos – Winged Winter Guests of Mumbai

In filmmaker Sairam Sagiraju’s words “I knew there were flamingos in Mumbai but I didn’t expect such a flamboyant display!”

Flamingos are migratory birds that have made the Rann of Kutch their home in India. They fly to the Mudflats of Mumbai during the winter months, in search of food and a safe vacation home. They arrive in October and stay till the onset of the next monsoon season. Increasing urbanization is definitely a threat, but the mindfulness of the Mumbai fishermen gives us hope that flamingos will continue to call the Mudflats their winter home for years to come.
